ABOUT THE UAE

Geography

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) lies on the Arabian Gulf and also shares a coastline with the Gulf of Oman. The UAE consists of seven Emirates or Sheikhdoms of which Dubai is the second largest after Abu Dhabi. The Gulf coast consists of golden beaches with many islands and coral reefs. The interior consists of untouched desert of varying colour and towards Oman, the Hajar Mountains rise 1527m into the air.

The Economy

The UAE enjoys one of the worlds highest per capita incomes which hovers around $ 21 000 per person, as opposed to the South African per capita figures of $ 2 000. The main industry is oil and gas related but trade, manufacturing, tourism and construction play an important part in the economic growth. The UAE is growing at annual rate of 8%, making it one of the fastest growing economies in the world.

Dubai's economy is more diverse and concentrates on manufacture and tourism rather than oil; in fact 88% of its economy is derived from the non-oil sector.

The Dhirham is the local currency and is fixed to the dollar at a rate of $1 equals Dhs 3.67.

Dubai's Population

According to recent statistics, the UAE has 3.1 million national and expat residents - with Dubai contributing 860 000 - and an anticipated growth rate of 6%. It is estimated that 25 000 South Africans live and work in the UAE. The major expat population is Asian, although there is strong representation from Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand.

Salaries

The days of Dubai being seen as a hardship posting are well and truly a thing of the past with many expats choosing to live in Dubai, not for the salaries, but for the overall lifestyle. A new expat coming to Dubai will experience a diversified cultural mix from all over the world, an abundance of five star restaurants and clubs, outdoor adventure, excellent infrastructure and a safe and secure environment.

Salaries are usually based on the following structure.

  • Basic salary. This is the amount that you earn
  • Housing Allowance or a company apartment. The value is dependant on your position. Generally a one or two bedroom apartment is the norm.
  • Furniture Allowance or a furnished apartment. This depends on company practice but the allowance is enough to cover the basic furniture and appliances.
  • Car allowance or motor vehicle. The companies will either provide you with an allowance which you can then utilise on a vehicle of your choice or they will provide you with a motor vehicle. This varies from company to company.
  • Medical aid for you and your family based on UAE labour law.
  • Flight Tickets to the value of your place of origin once per annum. You can choose where to take your vacation.
  • Mobile phone will be provided if this is necessary in performing your duties.
"Generally you will be able to save more in the UAE than if you lived in South Africa."

Why Work in the UAE?

Andre has lived and worked in Dubai since 1997 and plans to live there for the foreseeable future. Dubai affords candidates with the opportunity of working with the best people in their fields from across the globe. It is fast paced, offers a very high standard of living, and an abundant Asian labour force that allows for an equitable South African lifestyle.

There is very little crime and government agencies are efficient.

The outdoors range from the sea, which is on Dubai's doorstep to the desert and the mountains beyond. Social clubs are in abundance, as are restaurants and hotel resorts.

The schools are of a high standard and offer both UK and American curriculums and a wide range of extra-mural activities.

Cars are cheap in comparison to SA, but food is expensive and alcohol well past what South Africans are used to paying - then again you are earning Dhirhams.

UAE's Downside

Relocation can be very lonely as it leaves family, friends and the usual support networks behind. The working hours are long and the weekend is only one day. The work environment is fast, stressful and unpredictable.

The weather is very hot from June to September with a high humidity factor, although the winter months are blissful and the Arabian nights magical.

"The UAE is what you make it."
